The invisible impact:
bringing awareness
into our words

What if words left deeper marks
than we ever imagined?

What if words
left deeper marks
than we ever

In our lives as in our professions, we tend to let words come and go without assessing the impact they may have in the long term.

We exchange, we speak, we throw out phrases and words, often with very specific purposes: to share, to convince, to influence, to sell, to express…

Most of the time, we do not evaluate how our words will resonate with others: they may seem trivial, or on the contrary prove to be decisive, constructive, or even cruel.

Imagine this: you’ve been trying to build a relationship with someone you’ve loved with all your heart for years. And then, in the middle of a conversation you initiated to move the relationship forward, that person attacks you and belittles you on the subjects that matter most to you. In a fraction of a second, they have irreparably broken your heart. Violence is not only in actions; it also resides in words.

To bring awareness into our words is to elevate and refine a relationship, to strengthen trust and connection, but above all, it is to cultivate a remarkable emotional skill.

When words build… or destroy

Words could be compared to stones a master builder might have chosen to construct a house with his mason.

By taking care to align them properly, they build a solid home. On the other hand, if the alignment is neglected, the house becomes far more fragile. Cracks may appear, and the long-dreamed-of home may even collapse.

It sometimes takes years to build an edifice. Failing to set each stone with care is like neglecting the very value of its foundation.

A single word can shatter the construction of a relationship.

Like a shattered glass, even when glued back together it will always let slip what it contains, even the finest wine.

In human relationships, whether personal or professional, the choice and weight of words is essential.

Some words strike at the very core of our deepest needs: to be recognized, to feel safe, to believe in the future, to find one’s place. When a word denies or wounds these dimensions, it does not only damage the moment, it fractures the relationship itself.

And it is important to remember: just because a person appears strong in character does not mean their foundations or emotions are indestructible.
A word may seem trivial to the one who speaks it, but resonate as a deep wound in the one who receives it. Behind apparent strength lies an invisible part, and it is often there that words strike.

Even someone who seems strong can be deeply wounded by a careless word.

Awareness in human relationships

To bring awareness into our words is to recognize their reach.
Being mindful of one’s words is a true act of maturity.

In a team, in a couple, in a prestigious house or a refined restaurant, words can become either bridges or barriers.

Communication can be seen as a culinary art: one ingredient, poorly measured, can throw off an entire dish. Likewise, a single word spoken without awareness can destabilize an entire relationship.

Conversely, a word that is considered, sincere, and attentive becomes a perfect seasoning: it enhances, elevates, and makes you want to return.

Awareness as a component
of emotional intelligence

Daniel Goleman, pioneer of emotional intelligence, identifies five key domains: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and relational skills.

Awareness is a valuable skill: it begins with self-awareness and extends to awareness of the impact our words and actions have on others.

Ultimately, awareness means having the ability to:

  • Recognize the other in their vulnerability: not relying solely on their apparent strength
  • Measure the impact of words before speaking: understanding that they can build or destroy
  • Take responsibility: not hiding behind the excuse of “unintentional” harm
  • Build the bond: using words as bricks to elevate, protect, and strengthen the relationship

Strong relationships are not built on emotion alone, but on awareness: the awareness of staying a team, even when ego or fear would rather flee.

Awareness as protection

To be in relationship, in love or in leadership, is to protect the other from harm, not to become the source of their pain.

A true bond creates a refuge, not a storm. Those who respect it choose to protect, not to wound.

A shared responsibility

To be conscious of one’s words is to take responsibility for the bond one creates.

Every word leaves a mark: it can strengthen a bond or weaken it, open a future or close it.

We should not be afraid to step away from those who fail to recognize our value. Lasting relationships are built with those who respect us enough to measure the impact of their words (and actions) and to repair their mistakes.

Awareness as a lever
for transformation

Awareness is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

It transforms our personal and professional relationships and reminds us that our words carry a reach far greater than we may imagine.

The intelligence of the heart is an immaterial wealth, indispensable to the durability of relationships between colleagues, managers, partners, and clients.

It is in this spirit that I accompany, through mentorship and training, the development of emotional skills, individually or collectively. Contact me for more information.
